Basehor-Linwood Virtual Charter School - Linwood, Kansas

One of the few charter schools on the Internet, Basehor-Linwood is accredited by the Kansas State Board of Education. Students must either be currently home-schooled or have obtained a request from a local school district administration. The program provides an IMAC computer and textbooks for checkout fees of $20 for the computer and $40 for books. There is no additional charge for Kansas students. Students must be present for orientation day and must take state tests on the school campus. Although the structure is unscheduled and asynchronous, courses must be completed during the regular school year.

Basehor-Linwood offers a traditional K-12 curriculum taught by the district's regular teachers and staff. The program offers two distinct diplomas, General and College Prep. Both require 25 credits. The general program requires English, math, science, social studies, business math, physical education, and health. The college prep program requires English, math, science, foreign language, social studies, physical education, health, business math, computer applications, and multi-media presentation.

Education is provided on a password-protected Web site. Chat rooms permit exchanges among students and teachers. Virtual field trips are offered. Students are expected to have an adult who will supervise and help them with work. They must read weekly messages on an online discussion board and read and respond to e-mail. They must take a final exam in each course as well as State of Kansas required tests.
